curve ball #4

This pregnancy has been full of curve balls. Unlike any other pregnancy we've had, we've known trial, we've known waiting, we've known uncertainty, we've known fear. Girlfriend wants us on our toes, apparently :)

Recently we experienced our forth curve ball.

first, a re cap, if you're lost :)

Curve ball #1: Not getting pregnancy easily. All of our pregnancies until now happened the first month we tried. This pregnancy took 6 months. Not forever, but it felt like it and we learned a lot in the waiting.

Curve ball #2: They couldn't find the heart beat at my first visit. Some others said this was normal and that it happened to them and they didn't worry at all - awesome. We did. My doctor did too, since my other two babies had super strong heartbeats as early as 10 weeks. Thankfully an internal ultrasound confirmed her beating heart and ours started beating again, too.

Curve ball #3: A mere week after the heartbeat fiasco, I had cramping in my lower abdomen so terrible I couldn't walk. Brad was in the States for an MDiv course and I was with the kids alone. I was in so much pain I was lying on the floor unable to get up. Friends took me to the hospital and I was sure I was miscarrying. I wasn't, and the pain never returned. Strange and terrifying.

Now we're up to date! I'm full term (prego stats will end now that we're so close to the end, if you were wondering!), and in the last couple of weeks, another curve ball.

Curve ball #4: Baby is transverse (horizontal in my womb) and then breech (head up in my womb) past 35 weeks. It's said that after 35 weeks, the baby should be in the head down position, because she runs out of room to move much after that. The vast majority of babies are head down by 35 weeks, and even more by 37 weeks. Generally by 37 weeks (today) if a baby isn't head down, she won't go head down. Doctors can attempt to manipulate the uterus and turn her, deliver the baby breech (which can have complications), or suggest a C-Section (which is also riskier than a vaginal birth and something I was hoping not to have for my final birth).

Little Sister was flopping between full-on breech and transverse constantly over the last two weeks. I could see every kick (in my side) and it was clear by looking at my stomach where she was. That's what happens when the baby is big enough and has not much room - her kicks and rolls become very entertaining and clear.

I had asked several friends to pray Thursday morning at 10:30am for my appointment, where we'd see for sure and then talk about my options. As of Wednesday night she was definitely breech still. I could feel and see that. And by 11:30am, she was head down, in perfect position for vaginal birth.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boom.

God answers prayer, sometimes so clearly it makes my eyes water.

This pregnancy has made us rely on Him constantly and I'm thankful for that. Now I can look ahead to a somewhat familiar experience (child birth) in the coming couple weeks and not have to worry about an all-new surgery with a long recovery (remember, I have no local family and two toddlers!).

Thank you Thank you Thank you, Jesus.

prego stats - week 31

Look at me writing a prego stats post for ONE SINGLE WEEK. On the ball, folks! Let's just pretend my most recent post wasn't a month's posts in one :)

How far along: 31 weeks!

Total weight gain: 18ish lbs?

How big is baby: a pineapple! that's weird because I have one on my counter and can totally picture that... and it's big!

Maternity Clothes: yep! except one pair of Gap shorts that aren't maternity but were slightly too big before pregnancy and are low-rise.
Sleep: so hot guys! but I am getting at least 7 hours a night, and often more, so it's more than I'll be getting when baby girl comes :)

Best moment this week: Lily has been gone all week camping with my family, and Brad has been in Louisville, so it's just been Oli and I! So fun to dote on him and have more rest too.

Movement: LIKE WOAH. Come over around 8-10pm and see little sister go NUTS in my tummy. It's sure a show!

Food cravings: just general junk... not the best cravings but I'm only splurging once in a while.

Food aversions: zero! so nice to have my appetite back 100%.

Gender:girl

Labor signs: actually, YES. I know, not REAL labour signs, but Braxton Hicks contractions started this week. It's definitely false labour and I'm not concerned (neither are my doctors) but they are odd and sometimes annoying. They mostly occur at night before bed after she's been really active. I forgot how strange contractions (non-painful ones) feel! Like you are flexing your whole torso - which of course hasn't actually happened in months since I don't actually have in tact stomach muscles!

Belly button in or out: out

What I miss: I'm walking a lot slower these days and I can't wait to be back up to pace with normal people again! And my bump is starting to get in the way of a lot - cleaning, caring for the kids, bending over to pick something off the floor - all very difficult tasks with a HUGE bump in your tummy.

What I'm not loving: the heat, but it's cooled considerably this week so I can't complain.

What I’m looking forward to: MEETING HER! Now it's starting to feel legitimate. She is coming in a matter of weeks! I'm in the middle of my third trimester with only 9 weeks left if she comes full term. So so so so excited!

What I'm loving: being pregnant, no back pain, enjoying my kids, knowing she's coming soon.

Milestone(s): Braxton Hicks.

12.6.13

prego stats - week 25

Total weight gain: 11-12lbs (not 100% sure)

How big is baby: a rutabaga whatever that is :)

Maternity Clothes: yes, sir.

Sleep: Most days now I go without a nap and am OK with 8 hours at night. But probably every third or forth day I absolutely need to sleep when the kids are taking their naps. It catches up with me, it seems.

Best moment this week: coming home from holidays, adjusting back to being with our kids (it took a few days, for sure!), seeing our church family again, eating great food from my new cook book, etc (it's been a good week!)

Movement: SO much movement. The baby is hardly ever sleeping/still! She does somersaults instead of kicking now, and it's exhausting but fun.

Food cravings: just food, period. I'm eating a LOT.

Food aversions: none.

Gender: GIRL GIRL GIRL. still so excited.
Labor signs: n/a

Belly button in or out: out

What I miss: energy, ability to do more physically with my kids (parks, walks, carrying them whenever)

What I'm not loving: nearly-debilitating back pain has begun, similar to during my final month with Oli, except I still have 3 months of pregnancy. NOT COOL. I am wearing a maternity support belt all day, taking Tylenol regularly, and neither seems to be helping much at all. Hopefully it's not 15 more weeks of this nonstop!

What I’m looking forward to: my baby shower that my girl Morgan is throwing for me! I didn't get one with Oli (understandably), but was so touched when my friend offered to throw me one for baby3!

What I'm loving: being reunited with the kids again, being home, knowing babygirl is doing well (I had two appointments in the last few days - glucose test + check up and both were great!)

Milestone(s): have a name, are researching cars and new carseats to fit three kids in a non-van :)

prego stats - weeks 22-24

For weeks 22-24 I was on holidays with my hubster WITHOUT our kids! It was incredible. It was our first vacation without them and we loved it SO much. Some days I felt like I needed to do more since I was on holidays, but then I remembered that it was perfectly OK to let Brad go off exploring and to stay in our rental and sleep for huge portions of the day - what else does a prego with 2 toddlers need while on vacation, really??

Here's my stats for those weeks, I know I'm behind!

Total weight gain: 10lbs

How big is baby: spaghetti squash, large mango, ear of corn

Maternity Clothes: pretty much all the time - especially shirts since my bump is really large out front. some low rise pants still fit but I'm most comfortable in maternity.

Sleep: i did a LOT of this...

Best moment this week: all of it! having time away from our other saplings was so helpful to my soul. I returned refreshed to be an intentional parent, and physically rested to do the task.

Movement: loads and loads. girlfriend knows how to bust a move.

Food cravings: we ate some really amazing food on holidays, so ALL OF THAT, plus anything sweet and filling (carbs are my friend!)

Food aversions: zero!

Gender: petit fille

Labor signs: n/a

Belly button in or out: out

What I miss: I missed the kids slightly, in the 2nd week, but really nothing. I was in a pregnancy sweet spot. Maybe energy, as I could have used some more :)

What I'm not loving: lower back pain began at about 24 weeks. not a good sign!

What I’m looking forward to:  le bebe!

What I'm loving: WE CHOSE A NAME! We had it narrowed down to two for a long time and I was strongly adamant about one and Brad was open to both and not sure of either. We ended up going with the name I didn't prefer as strongly after seeing it everywhere on holidays :)

Milestone(s): see above :)

16.5.13

prego stats - 21 weeks

How far along: 21 weeks, AKA OVER THE HUMPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Total weight gain: not 100% sure, probably 10 lbs? I've read + been told that for my body mass index + height my weight gain should be just as it should, so I'm glad for that. For those interested, it tends to average 5lbs in the 1st trimester, and then 1 lb every week thereafter. Resulting in approximately 25-35lbs gained total. This has generally been the way things have gone for me, and then it takes about the same amount of time to loose the weight (9 months). Don't we all wish it took ONE? But that's another post for another day :)

How big is baby: length of a carrot. anyone else find these slightly unhelpful? What kind of carrot? In my fridge right now we have carrots of various sizes. I want more details!

Maternity Clothes: A lot of my shorts from last summer fit right now (not maternity) because last summer I was still losing weight from my pregnancy with Oli. When I finally lost all the weight (approximately 12 months after his birth) the shorts were too large, but now that I'm 21 weeks, they're perfect. I also find pants/shorts can fit if they're low rise since my bump hasn't dropped yet. But shirts are mostly all maternity now since I need the extra length.

Sleep: my body and baby3 may be allowing me sleep (thank goodness!) but my older two kids haven't been lately :( Oli has been waking EVERY SINGLE NIGHT for over a month, between 10pm and 1am, and normally for up to an hour. Not fun.

Best moment this week: The kids regularly take turns kissing, "hugging", and cuddling their little sister (aka the bump) which is the sweetest! And I found a darling little dress, brand new (tags still on!) in light blue/chambray for Little Sister for $2 at Salvation Army this week and it got me verrrrry excited for another girl!

Movement: yes, but very low! And much more subtle than the other two were at 21 weeks, but again, probably because she's so low. It's hard for others to feel her movements because of her placement but I feel a lot internally.

Food cravings:My sweet tooth is BACK. I'm sorry to my dentist.

Food aversions:Not much lately, though I've been opting for more vegetarian meals lately.

Gender: GIRL!

Labor signs: n/a

Belly button in or out: like always in pregnancy, out. And Public Service Announcement: it's NOT FUN when anyone (including my husband) pokes the protruding belly button. It actually hurts and you might be surprised how many people do it. They think it's cute and funny but it's very stretched skin and painful.

What I miss: sleep, but I can't blame pregnancy on that right now (cough Oli cough).

What I'm not loving: at the end of the day my lower body aches a bit, and in the morning my feet get painful cramps, but they go away quickly.

What I’m looking forward to: 2 weeks without the kiddos!!! Brad and I are headed on our first kids-free trip and it is coming at THE BEST TIME. We need this bad.

What I'm loving: Being pregnant, seeing the kids engage with the pregnancy, warm weather :)
